Biography
Paul Morrison is a senior lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry in South London. He is also a consultant psychiatrist at The Maudsley hospital specialising in early intervention in psychosis. Dr Morrison studied pharmacology in Glasgow, neuroscience at Northwestern University and psychiatry in London. Paul continues to lecture on a range of themes within psychiatry at King’s College London. He is also an honorary lecturer at Imperial and UCL. Dr Morrison's research at The Institute of Psychiatry has focussed on cannabinoids and psychosis. Working alongside Robin Murray and Shitij Kapur, Paul explored the phenomenological and neurophysiological effects of cannabinoids in a series of experimental studies utilising EEG, virtual reality and SPECT. Highlights were the effect of psychotogenic cannabinoids such as THC on central nervous system oscillations. A major finding was the protective effect of a unique cannabinoid called cannabidiol (CBD) in psychosis. The experimental work with CBD has now progressed to a successful randomised controlled trial in schizophrenic patients. Along with colleagues from the National Psychosis Unit at The Maudsley, Dr Morrison frequently provides state of the art lectures in psychopharmacology and drug discovery to psychiatrists across the UK. Dr Morrison also writes a regular blog on a range of topics in mental health and neuroscience http://www.paulmorrison.org/blog/.
